Privacy Policy

This policy covers the INSPEC device, the Lucid Scribe mobile app, and the Lucid Scribe desktop app.

1. Introduction

This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, and protect your data when using the INSPEC device and associated software.

2. Data Collection

The INSPEC utilizes machine vision to detect facial movement and analyze eye movement patterns locally on the device without sending data to external servers. However, users may optionally choose to transmit video recordings and facial images over Bluetooth or Wi-Fi to the Lucid Scribe mobile app and the Lucid Scribe desktop app.

3. Local Processing and Optional Transmission

All image processing and movement detection occur directly on the INSPEC device. By default, no video recordings, facial images, or raw data are stored, transmitted, or shared. If enabled by the user, video recordings and facial images can be transmitted over Bluetooth or Wi-Fi to the Lucid Scribe mobile app and the Lucid Scribe desktop app. Additionally, users may choose to share sleep logs with the Lucid Scribe Database (https://LSDBase.org) to contribute to sleep research and data analysis.

4. Third-Party Sharing

lucidcode does not sell, rent, or share any user data with third parties. We rely on two Google services, and only as described in section 6. Google Drive stores your backup if you switch that feature on, in your own Google account. Firebase Analytics records anonymous usage events on Android. Neither one receives the contents of your dream journal, and neither is used for advertising.

5. User Rights

Since the INSPEC does not store personal data by default, there is no need for data access, modification, or deletion requests. Users who opt-in to share anonymized usage data or transmit video recordings and facial images may disable these features at any time.

The Lucid Scribe apps do store what you write, on your own device rather than on our servers. Section 8 sets out your rights over that data and how to exercise them.

6. The Lucid Scribe apps

6.1 What the app stores on your device

Everything you write and record is stored locally, in an application database and in app settings storage on your phone:

Dream journal entries, including titles, dream text, comments, dates, sleep and wake times, lucidity and clarity ratings.
Categories and dream sign words, including any words you exclude from dream sign detection.
Technique settings and progress, including reminders, alarms and training programme state.
Photographs you take for reality check training.

None of this is transmitted to lucidcode. Uninstalling the app removes it from your device.

6.2 Optional Google Drive backup

Google Drive backup is off by default. Nothing is uploaded unless you connect an account in the app's settings.

When you connect, you sign in to Google directly, and the app never sees your Google password.

The app requests a single permission, drive.file. This grants access only to files the app itself creates. It cannot read, list or modify any other file in your Google Drive.

Backups are written to a folder named "Lucid Scribe" in your own Google Drive, as a dated backup file containing your journal.

An access token is stored in your device's secure keystore so backups can continue without asking you to sign in again.

What lucidcode can see: nothing. The app communicates directly with Google's servers from your phone. Your backups sit in your Google Drive under your own account. lucidcode operates no server in this process and holds no copy of your journal.

Limited use: Lucid Scribe's use of information received from Google APIs adheres to the Google API Services User Data Policy (https://developers.google.com/terms/api-services-user-data-policy), including the Limited Use requirements. Data obtained through the Drive permission is used solely to create and restore your own backups, is never transferred to anyone else, is never used for advertising, and is never read by a human.

Turning it off: disconnecting Google Drive in the app's settings deletes the stored token from your device. Backup files already in your Drive stay there and are yours to keep or delete. You can also revoke the app's access at any time from your Google account permissions page (https://myaccount.google.com/permissions).

6.3 Analytics

On Android, the app records anonymous usage events through Google Firebase Analytics, such as which screens are opened. This helps us understand which techniques people use so we can improve them. Dream content is never included in analytics events. Analytics is not enabled on iOS.

Firebase Analytics is provided by Google. See Firebase's privacy documentation (https://firebase.google.com/support/privacy) for how it handles that data.

6.4 App permissions

Microphone and speech recognition: to dictate dream journal entries and record custom audio prompts. Speech recognition is performed by your device's operating system, which may process audio through Apple or Google services under their own privacy policies.

Camera: to photograph reality check targets for prospective memory training. Photographs stay on your device.

Bluetooth: to connect to an INSPEC device for REM detection. The connection is local, between your phone and the device.

Notifications: to deliver reality check reminders, wake-back-to-bed alarms and technique prompts.

7. Who we are and how to contact us

The INSPEC device and the Lucid Scribe apps are made by lucidcode, based in The Hague, the Netherlands. For anything in this policy, including requests about your data, write to support@lucid-code.com.

For the purposes of the General Data Protection Regulation, lucidcode is the data controller for the processing described here.

8. Your rights under the GDPR

You have the right to access, correct, erase and port your personal data, and to object to processing. Because your journal lives on your own device, most of this is in your hands directly:

Access and portability: the app's Settings screen has Export Dream Journal, which writes a complete copy of your data to a file you choose.

Erasure: delete individual entries from the journal, or uninstall the app to remove everything held on your device. Backups are deleted from Google Drive itself. Note that Settings, Clear Data resets technique settings and progress only, and does not delete your journal.

9. Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy as necessary to reflect changes in our practices. Users will be notified of any significant changes.
